Scrapped WWE WrestleMania 32 Plans For The Undertaker Revealed

The Undertaker is synonymous with WWE WrestleMania, with Taker’s matches at the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ a highlight every year until his retirement in 2020 after his Boneyard match win against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36.

Despite not being a classic Mania event, WrestleMania 32 in 2016 did feature Taker facing off with Shane McMahon in a Hell in a Cell match that saw Shane O’Mac plummet from the top of the structure through the announce table. However, during a conversation with WrestleSphere, Kevin Owens claims that original plans for the event had Owens taking on ‘The Deadman’ instead:

"I think things just shifted and that was the year that Shane McMahon returned, so obviously at the time, my standing in the company compared to Shane McMahon coming back after all those years, the thought was probably ‘Shane McMahon versus The Undertaker is a huge match.' I know it was on the table and it was heavily discussed and it would have been amazing. My first WrestleMania, to be in there with The Undertaker, would have been sweet. It didn’t happen, but I’ve been in the ring with him. I was actually in the ring with him in the main event of a Madison Square Garden show, so I got to do that with him which was really cool," said Owens.

Owens instead headed into WrestleMania 32 as the defending Intercontinental Champion, but lost the title in a seven-man ladder match that opened the main show.

Could have been worse for Owens, at least he wasn’t buried like The Wyatt Family were by The Rock, although Brian Gewirtz claimed that Rock was willing to put Bray Wyatt over on the show.
