Ever since EC3 returned to WWE in 2018, wrestling fans have been critical of how the company has booked the former IMPACT world champion. While Ethan Carter III was one of the top stars in IMPACT Wrestling, he has been relegated to being a jobber on Monday Night Raw.

After he returned to WWE in 2018, The Top One Percent went on to lose almost all of his high profile matches in NXT. He then moved to the main roster in February 2019 and has been primarily used to elevate other wrestlers, losing to Superstars like Titus O'Neill, Tyler Breeze, and Apollo Crews.

Fans hoped his fortunes would change back in April as during a dark match against Luke Harper on SmackDown, he was reunited with his old manager Drake Maverick. EC3 ultimately lost the match and he has rarely been on TV since.

Dave Meltzer explained on Wrestling Observer Radio

that this is because Vince McMahon "hated" his pairing with Maverick and "gave up" on The Top One Percent after the match.

Meltzer said: "I think that Vince (McMahon) pretty much gave up on EC3 real fast…They did a try out in April of EC3 with Drake Maverick and putting them back together like they were in TNA, and Vince hated that too so I don’t think this one is a Paul (Heyman) call."
