In the main event of Hell In A Cell, Drew McIntyre defended the WWE Championship against Randy Orton. Many people predicted The Scottish Psychopath would once again defeat Orton, but The Viper picked up the win after catching McIntyre with an RKO. With the win, The Legend Killer is now a 14-time world champion.

Fightful Select reported there was "plenty of confusion" amongst WWE Superstars over the decision to have The Apex Predator go over. In particular, many were confused about the timing of Orton's win as the 14-time world champion had been protected in the build to SummerSlam, defeating the likes of Edge and The Big Show, but he had since been beaten by Keith Lee and Drew McIntyre. Fightful also noted Orton is well-liked backstage and has been helping out younger Superstars over the past year.

Why the company booked The Viper to win the WWE Title at Hell In A Cell specifically is currently unknown, but Orton is reportedly set to be WWE Champion heading into WrestleMania 37 where he will go one on one with Edge.
