At WrestleMania 36, Braun Strowman finally became Universal Champion at the seventh time of asking after he defeated Goldberg in three minutes. The result surprised many fans as they assumed Goldberg would retain the title so that he could drop the belt to Roman Reigns at a later date.

Louis Dangoor at WrestleTalk revealed this was WWE's original plan as the company wanted Goldberg to specifically put over The Big Dog. Tentative plans were put in place for the former WCW star to hold the Universal title until SummerSlam when he would have dropped the championship to Reigns.

However, WWE was forced to scrap these plans because Goldberg's contract was set to expire at The Showcase Of The Immortals and he did not want to extend it beyond April 5.

The company ultimately chose The Monster Among Men as Reigns' replacement because he had to defeat Goldberg and look credible in doing so.

Dangoor also revealed that WWE has no plans to bring Goldberg back for another match in 2020, so fans don't have to worry about the 53-year-old winning another world title any time soon.
