WWE were not expecting fans in St. Louis, Missouri to fill the Enterprise Center with "Rocky Sucks" chants on Monday Night Raw.

One of WWE's most controversial booking decisions in years has seen The Rock effectively replace Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 40 and Dwayne Johnson will challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at the company's biggest show of the year. The match has yet to be officially announced but reports have indicated The Rock will "100%" be facing Reigns at WrestleMania.

The match came about after Cody stepped aside for The Rock on SmackDown, despite winning the Royal Rumble, noting that he wanted to take everything from Reigns, not just the Undisputed WWE Universal Title. This has prompted fans to revolt against the switch, with #WeWantCody trending on social media and the mass disliking of the staredown between Reigns and The Rock on social media. The Rock was also booed at NXT Vengeance Day.

The groundswell of support for Rhodes has become an angle, with the company wanting to present him as Danel Bryan from the mid-2010s.

As part of the angle, WWE leaned into the negative response on Monday Night Raw, including handing out #WeWantCody signs at Monday Night Raw. There were also chants of "Rocky Sucks" during the opening segment of Raw between Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes, with Rollins acknowledging the chants while Michael Cole jokingly said it was 1996.

While WWE expected the fan support for Cody Rhodes, they didn't expect anti-Rock chants to happen on Monday Night Raw, according to WrestleVotes.

"I am told the "Rocky Sucks" chants that took place last night on RAW totally threw certain people off. While this 'viral reaction' story was leaned into last night, that part of it was something unexpected," WrestleVotes tweeted.

Cody Rhodes has since urged fans to trust him. The main event of WrestleMania 40 will likely be confirmed at the WWE press conference in Las Vegas on Thursday.
