As a duo, Sheamus and Cesaro entertained WWE's fans as both rivals and partners. In 2016, they competed in a Best Of Seven series which ended in three wins apiece. After this, Raw GM Mick Foley put them together as a tag team and they achieved great success over the next two and a half years. They ended The New Day's historic Tag Team title reign at Roadblock: End Of The Line and went on to capture Tag Team gold on another four occasions.

Despite their success, WWE broke up the pair after 2019's Superstar Shake-up as Cesaro was drafted to Monday Night Raw, while Sheamus remained on SmackDown. The Celtic Warrior then spent eight months on the shelf recovering from injuries and made his return to WWE TV in December.

As part of WWE's celebration for moving to BT Sport, Jack King sat down for an interview with Sheamus, Nikki Cross and Paige. During their chat, Sheamus explained The Bar split up because they felt they had achieved everything they could in the tag team division and they had unfinished business as singles Superstars. He made particular reference to wanting to capture the Intercontinental Championship, the only title he has not held in WWE.

The former WWE champion said: "Well me and Cesaro have achieved everything there is to do, we’re five-time tag champs. I think The Bar is something where we have cemented our legacies as The Bar, like we can always go back to that and anything we do will be massive, but we’re both on a bit of a singles journey at the moment and there’s still a lot I want to achieve as a singles guy. Obviously the Intercontinental title is the one I still haven’t won, so that’s all I really care about right now."
