Gunther’s run as WWE Intercontinental Champion has broken a whole host of records, but all title runs are eventually meant to end, with some believing Gunther’s time had come before the February 19 edition of RAW.

‘Der Ring General’ put the belt on the line against ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso on Raw, with reports coming out after the show indicating that Jey was possibly set to defeat the dominant IMPERIUM leader and take the title. A follow-up report from Fightful Select suggests that whilst info of a title switch was apparently ‘relayed to a couple of people’ within WWE, it was never officially planned.

Initial reports suggested the switch was on the cards until at least two hours prior to bell time on February 19, but ultimately Gunther retained, with a little help from The Bloodline’s Jimmy Uso.

Gunther gained the title in June 2022 after defeating Ricochet for the strap. The former NXT UK Champion has since gone on to reign with the belt for over 625 days, breaking the record for longest single reign of the title, as well as becoming the longest overall reigning champion, beating Pedro Morales 619 days as champion across two reigns.
