Universal Championship Angle Teased for WWE Smackdown
Roman Reigns retained the Championship at WrestleMania 37
Apr 13, 2021
WWE official Adam Pearce has teased the continuation of a feud over the Universal Championship between Roman Reigns and Edge following an interaction on social media.
Reigns retained the Universal Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 37, beating Edge and Daniel Bryan in a triple threat match by stacking both men in a pile and pinning both of their shoulders to the mat.
However, an eagle-eyed fan has noted that Edge is also technically pinning Bryan and could therefore have a legitimate claim to be the Universal champion.
Pearce, responding to the opinion on Twitter, wrote 'interesting take', prompting a response from senior official - and the referee for Sunday's main event - Charles Robinson.
Robinson wrote: "Four shoulders were on the mat. Roman was on top of both and in charge. It’s my discretion and that’s the final call."
However, it appears the matter is far from settled with Pearce responding: "Charles, please come and see me in my office on Friday. Thank you."
The interaction seems to suggest that Royal Rumble winner Edge will continue to feud with Reigns over the Universal Championship. With WrestleMania Backlash announced for May 16, 2021, it is possible the WWE Universe could see the two meet in singles action.
