While a match between Jon Moxley and Hiroshi Tanahashi has been teased going back to the summer of 2021, the bout was never booked, although it will finally take place when the two competitors square off for the Interim AEW World Title at Forbidden Door on June 26.

The reason the match never took place before Forbidden Door was ultimately because of Tony Khan and the AEW President revealed he repeatedly nixed Moxley vs. Tanahashi.

"I would never allow it to happen. They tried to do it so many times...I have always been there to stop it from happening. It's such a huge match that we had to be involved if it was going to happen," Khan said on Busted Open Radio.

Khan noted it was fate that the match will take place for the first time at Forbidden Door as the major bout will be the main event of the joint AEW and NJPW pay-per-view.

Moxley earned a spot in the Interim AEW World Title match by defeating Kyle O'Reilly, while Hiroshi Tanahashi advanced to Forbidden Door by beating Hirooki Goto at Dominion on June 12.
