They are one of the most celebrated acts of modern WWE, and in the conversation for greatest tag team and faction of all time, but Vince McMahon reportedly tried to split The New Day up ‘repeatedly’.

The trio of Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston, and Big E have won practically all there is to win in WWE and were at one point a merchandising machine, but a report from Fightful Select suggests McMahon made repeated attempts over the years to split the group up.

The report states that ‘multiple people who have worked’ on WWE’s creative team said that The New Day themselves clearly stated they never wanted an on screen fracture, but McMahon suggested numerous ways to end the trio, such as only referring to them as The New Day when all three were present, and for Woods to turn on Kofi Kingston after winning the King of the Ring tournament in 2021 because it’s “what a King would do”.

The trio were split in the WWE draft in 2020, with Big E remaining on SmackDown whilst Woods and Kingston were sent to Raw. The New Day were soon reunited, but were quickly split once more, with Fightful’s report also stating that McMahon was adamant in his decisions. A further plan suggested the group be disintegrated following Kingston’s historic Kofimania run in 2019.

Whilst the New Day have never officially parted ways, their status is currently up in the air with Woods currently the only active member of the group, with Kingston and Big E both on the shelf with injury.
