WWE reportedly originally planned to use the first-ever Women's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic to crown the first NXT Women's Tag Team Champions.

NXT introduced the Women's Tag Team Titles this past Wednesday with general manager William Regal awarding the belts to Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez, the team who won the Dusty Rhodes Classic in February. However, the duo were beaten for the belts later in the evening by their first challengers, Shotzi Blackheart and Ember Moon.

It has been reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE came up with the concept of the NXT-specific Women's titles a while ago and the original plan was for the winners of the inaugural female Dusty Rhodes tag team tournament to be crowned the champions.

However, WWE ended up 'rushing' the tournament, meaning the championship belts were not ready in time for the Final at NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day. WWE decided to award the winners a shot at the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships - held by Nia Jax and Shanya Baszler - and came up with last week's controversial finish to their match as a means to introduce the new titles.

There has been no word on as to why the promotion rushed through the women's tournament, but it appears there was a desire to ensure it ran co-currently alongside the men's version.
