On the August 28 edition of SmackDown, WWE revealed Paul Heyman was Roman Reigns' new manager. Brock Lesnar's former advocate later revealed Reigns plucked him from obscurity and corrupted him, as opposed to the other way around. He will now serve as the High Chief's Special Counsel and The Big Dog will be announced as "the reignsing, defending undisputed Universal Heavyweight Champion."

Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE plans to make the dynamic between Reigns and Heyman as different as possible from the former Raw Executive Director's partnership with Brock Lesnar.

The idea is that fans know Lesnar and Heyman are friends who have been close going back to 2002 when Lesnar debuted on Raw. Heyman and Lesnar were also equal partners in Lesnar's success. This won't be the case between Reigns and his special counsel. There will be no on-screen friendship between The Big Dog and Heyman and Reigns is in complete control of the relationship since he saved CM Punk's former manager's WWE career.
