WWE are reportedly targeting John Cena vs. Roman Reigns for the main event of this year's SummerSlam.

Reports have circulated for a number of weeks that WWE are preparing to bring out the big guns in time for this year's SummerSlam as fans return to the product on a regular basis. Cena's name has been one of the most heavily touted for a summer return.

The 16-time WWE Champion has been rumoured to be going into a big program at SummerSlam, which WWE has confirmed for Saturday 21 August in Las Vegas, and sports journalist John Alba is reporting that the company is targeting a match between Cena and Universal Champion Reigns in the main event of the show.

Cena's schedule, which has seen the wrestler-turned-actor filming and promoting the likes of Fast And Furious 9 and Peacemaker, clears up in July, coinciding with a return for fans to WWE shows and giving him ample time to build a big match with The Tribal Chief.

Cena and Reigns previously clashed at WWE No Mercy 2017 in an understated, if slightly underwhelming, encounter. The two built a compelling rivalry over respect and being the face of WWE.

With Reigns' current iteration as The Tribal Chief undoubtedly the most interesting story on WWE television right now, the two could create an intriguing summer rivalry.
