Cody Rhodes is no longer just expected to sign with WWE, his return is actually happening, according to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated.

"Sources close to the situation have confirmed that his next destination will be back where his career started in WWE," Barrasso wrote.

When exactly Cody will re-debut on WWE TV remains to be seen but Sports Illustrated speculated The American Nightmare could film segments at the Performance Center this weekend.

Reports have noted Rhodes is expected to receive a big push once he does appear on TV again.

The three-time TNT Champion isn't expected to be joined in WWE by his wife Brandi, although this does not necessarily mean her professional wrestling career is over, only that she won't be making her own return to Vince McMahon's company.

Cody previously spent 10 years in WWE from 2006 until 2016, when he was granted his release.

The American Nightmare requested he be let go after growing frustrated in WWE, particularly with his lack of direction, the creative team, and his Stardust gimmick. Barrasso noted this won't be an issue upon Cody's return, though, and it is expected he will have "a far different relationship with the writing team and [Vince] McMahon."

During his first run with WWE, Cody was a two-time Intercontinental Champion and six-time tag team champion.

Following his release, Rhodes competed for the likes of NJPW, IMPACT and ROH before he was a founding member of All Elite Wrestling in January 2019, as well as one of the promotion's Executive Vice Presidents.

His departure from AEW was made official on Tuesday after he and the promotion were unable to work out a new contract, with both sides said to be far apart on money, among other factors.
