Kofi Kingston's dramatic pursuit and ultimate capture of the WWE Title in 2019 almost didn't come to fruition, according to former SmackDown writer Brian 'Road Dogg' James.

Kofi had to overcome several obstacles (typically put there by Mr. McMahon) en route to beating WWE Champion Daniel Bryan in a dramatic contest at WrestleMania 35.

Per James, had WWE listened to his suggestion, the honour would have went to someone else.

Speaking on Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Outlaws podcast, he said:  "Truth be told, I pitched Big E being 'the guy'. Just because I love Big E, his character - he's a big guy so he's a believable character".

WWE didn't go with his idea, however, and Kingston held the WWE Title for six months, before dropping it to Brock Lesnar on the debut episode of SmackDown on Fox.

Regarding that infamous eight-second loss, the current Vice President of WWE Live Events doesn't believe it 'ruined' Kofi.

"I don't think it ruined Kofi. I think it probably was Fox, Brock Lesnar, cross-appeal. He's a name, and Vince loves him and Vince is drawing with him, tried and true. Hey, let's shock the world, send him out there, and kill [Kingston] in a minute. I can hear him saying it now. It is what it is, but maybe Big E would've given a better battle".
