Paul Heyman says Jey Uso's valuable contribution to the resurgence of Friday Night Smackdown's ratings means he has earned his place as a main-eventer in WWE.

Uso was chosen as the first challenger to cousin Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship in the second half of 2020 and, while the decision was initially seen as a strange one by WWE, the two put on arguably the feud of the year, engaging in highly emotional matches at Night Of Champions and Hell In a Cell.

Since then, Jey Uso has joined up with Reigns on Smackdown and has faced and beaten the likes of Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens in main events on the Friday night show.

Heyman, the Special Counsel to Roman Reigns, pointed out that Uso has been involved in more television main events than anyone since Reigns' return to WWE programming and says the former Tag Team Champion has earned his spot.

Uso is set to main event Smackdown again this week, against 2021 Royal Rumble winner Edge.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Heyman said: "If you take a look at SmackDown’s global ratings, Jey Uso was not given the name tag 'main event Jey Uso' just because we placed him in the main event.

"Jey Uso has been at the core of the resurgence of SmackDown ratings. Since the end of September, he has been in more main events on SmackDown than anybody else on any of WWE’s brands - SmackDown, RAW, NXT, NXT UK..."

"Jey Uso has earned the main event status and that’s something that Edge is up against on SmackDown. And I also will offer that Jey Uso will be 'main event Jey Uso', worthy of the main event, indicative of the main event and a picture-perfect example of the modern-day main event in 2021.

"Jey Uso is at the top of his game, he’s never been better and Edge will learn that first hand on SmackDown."
