LA Knight is currently enjoying one of the best runs of his career, though the man himself suspects it came close to not happening at all.

The 40-year-old WWE star believed he was about to be fired prior to being repackaged as Max Dupri in early 2022.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet for Insight, Knight revealed how he thought he was on the chopping block before being given the gig on SmackDown.

"Well let me just go ahead and say this, I'm pretty sure I was fired and it just hadn’t officially happened yet. But without getting into too many details, some things happened, I don't remember what it was, but some things happened and I had gotten a FaceTime, 'Hey, we wanna keep you around, we wanna do this, that, whatever', somehow I had been saved from being thrown off the cliff, at least this is my interpretation of it.

"Maybe I'm incorrect, I don't know. Eventually, things just kind of worked out and I think maybe again, maybe some of the testament of why things are working the way they are and why people are reacting the way are is because one of these [characters] is not me and I didn't know who it was and one of these was very much me and I didn't have to think about LA Knight".

Max Dupri wouldn't last long, with the gimmick being scrapped for the return of LA Knight after only a few months. Knight recently revealed that he was made a manager on the main roster due to concerns about his age.

Knight is set to compete in the men's Money in the Bank Ladder Match at the namesake premium live event this Saturday.
