Kurt Angle Reveals Why He Thought Farewell WWE Match Against AJ Styles Was Embarrassing
Angle's WWE match with Styles did not go as he had planned
May 4, 2022
AJ Styles was the topic of conversation for the latest episode of The Kurt Angle Show podcast, with the WWE Hall of Famer discussing his long and storied rivalry with the Phenomenal One.
While Angle and Styles had some classic matches against one another in TNA, they were unfortunately unable to replicate that magic in WWE.
Kurt and AJ squared off on the March 26, 2019, episode of SmackDown in what turned out to be Angle's second-last match (he retired after losing to Baron Corbin at WrestleMania 35).
Speaking about his and AJ's lone WWE outing, the Olympic Hero revealed that he was embarrassed by their efforts.
"The thing was, I requested this match to Vince McMahon. I had the farewell tour and they allowed me to request certain matches, and I requested AJ Styles and Samoa Joe over any other WWE wrestler and I made sure I got those two.
"AJ and I went out there, it was three minutes and we kicked ass for three minutes. But what're you going to do? There was no finish and it just kind of sucked. Unfortunately for AJ and I, it wasn't the finish that we wanted.
"Not the way I wanted to end my career, and Randy Orton did not get up for me on the Angle Slam. This match was so embarrassing, it showed no traces of the real Kurt Angle. It was like the old beat-up Kurt Angle with the quad injury, no finish, it was just horrible".
