Kurt Angle: Me & Shawn Michaels Were Disappointed By Our WWE Iron Man Match Draw
A finish to protect them both
Oct 4, 2021
Beginning at the 2005 Royal Rumble, Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels spent much of the year feuding with each other. Angle won their first encounter at WrestleMania 21 in one of the pay-per-view's best-ever matches, but Michaels emerged victorious from their second match at Vengeance.
This led to a third bout on the October 3 episode of Monday Night Raw when the two Hall Of Famers faced off in a 30-minute Iron Man Match. The match and the feud would end without a decisive winner, though, as the contest ended in a 2-2 draw. Michaels challenged The Wrestling Machine to wrestle a sudden death fall, but Angle refused and left the arena.
Reflecting on the match during a watch-along on The Kurt Angle Show, the Olympic Gold Medallist admitted he and Shawn were disappointed by the "crappy finish."
"I think Shawn and I were both disappointed, but we agreed to do it because it wouldn't hurt either one of us. It did affect the match, and that was the hardest part because any time you wrestle Shawn Michaels, you know it's gonna be a classic," Angle said.
"Unfortunately, this match with a crappy finish because we tied and there was no decisive winner, it took away from the match a little bit. There's no doubt about that. This match is really good, but it wasn't our best match and that's because we tied."
Angle and Michaels wouldn't face off in another singles match before Kurt was granted his WWE release in 2006. Angle would then go on to sign with TNA and he recently revealed why he opted to join the promotion.
