Gunther is very close to breaking the Honky Tonk Man’s record of the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time, with September 9th being the day in which he will officially surpass the Hall of Famer.

When speaking in an interview with Jeff Snyder, Gunther shared his thoughts on coming up to his iconic record.

"I mean, yeah, we'll see if that happens. There's still some time to go. I actually think, because I just looked it up before, I think September 9th is the day where the record falls on and quite soon after that we're in Norfolk. So maybe I can have a little celebration then."

Gunther then went on to talk about being involved in the conversation of great Intercontinental Champions, especially since so many huge names have held the belt in the past.

"We'll see. Once it's all done, I think it's a great accomplishment obviously. For myself, growing up in Austria and watching WWE as a kid on tapes. Back then watching like Bret [Hart] and Shawn [Michaels] and whoever held the title then. Now fast forward all those years, being in the same conversation as those people. That's still something very surreal to me, obviously. But it's also something I pretty much grew into now. I belong there. I think what I [have] added to the legacy of the title is something very special."
