Gunther Not Interested In Changing WWE Name Back To WALTER
The Intercontinental Champion feels like he has 'stepped up' since the name change
Sep 7, 2022
Don't expect current WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther to go back to his using old ring name WALTER anytime soon.
Speaking with Alex McCarthy for Inside the Ropes, Der Ring General was asked whether the name change bothered him and if he would like to change it back.
"No, not really, to be honest. I think, what I can for me, it felt like a step up in general, compared to who I was before, and I wouldn't want to take that away. I think progress is always something positive and not negative, and I think it would be more negative to be like, go back to who I was before. I've put a lot of work into being a new person, an updated version of myself, so I wouldn't want to take that away".
Gunther's Imperium partner Ludwig Kaiser was also asked about potentially changing back to his old moniker (he previously performed as Marcel Barthel), to which he had a similar response.
"It's the same for me. I think whatever the name is, the package and the performance is gonna be the same, and that goes for the both of us. I'm very happy with it and I can just agree with what WALTER said, what Gunther said. It felt like a step up, definitely. I'm very happy with it, and it's a new stage of our career".
Gunther retained his title in a hard-hitting war with Sheamus at this past Saturday's Clash At The Castle event. Prior to the match, Giovanni Vinci rejoined Imperium.
Vinci had previously gone by his real name, Fabian Aichner.
