From 2008 until 2011, TNA and New Japan Pro-Wrestling had a working relationship in which stars from both companies would compete on each other's shows. This resulted in the likes of Christian Cage, Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam competing at Wrestle Kingdom, while Kazuchika Okada and Shinsuke Nakamura wrestled in the American promotion.

The partnership came to an end in 2011, however. Past reports have noted the relationship fell apart because Vince Russo was working for TNA, Okada was misused in the IMPACT Zone whereby he was billed as Okato, a knock-off version of a character from The Green Hornet, and TNA refused to allow Team 3D to travel to Japan for a tour despite them being IWGP Tag Team Champions at the time.

IMPACT Wrestling tried to restart a working relationship between the two promotions in late 2019, but NJPW refused their offer.

Despite New Japan's reluctance, Doc Gallows recently told This Is Wrestling on TSN 1200 that he would love to see IMPACT and NJPW form a working relationship again.

"What we want to do is just continue to grow IMPACT," The Good Brother said. "I want IMPACT to continue to grow and get bigger and get better so that when our friends are calling us and they've got contracts up in other places we can go, 'Hey, we can do this for you over here. What do you think? Come jump onboard. Come have some fun and come party with us.' And I think it'd be great. I'd love to see New Japan and IMPACT be able to form a working relationship at some point. I think that would be beneficial on both sides and I would really love to see that and hopefully help be part of making them come together."
