Cody Rhodes wants WWE fans to trust him.
Rhodes has been at the centre of a WWE fan backlash in recent days after he was effectively replaced by The Rock in the main event of WrestleMania 40. Cody had the opportunity to face Roman Reigns at the Show of Shows with his Royal Rumble win but Rhodes stood aside for The Rock on SmackDown, saying he wanted to take everything from Reigns and not just the Undisputed WWE Universal Title.
Roman Reigns vs. The Rock has yet to be made official for WrestleMania 40 but Cody effectively being replaced was met with disgust and WWE fans revolted against the booking decision, with the segment between The Rock and Reigns becoming the most disliked WWE YouTube video ever. #WeWantCody also trended on social media.
The groundswell of support for Cody has since been turned into a work by WWE and Rhodes has urged fans to trust him, tweeting during WWE Raw: "Appreciate the passion, God bless y'all ...but Trust me."
Rhodes made an appearance during Monday Night Raw and he was showered with chants of "We want Cody" and "Rocky sucks" during his opening segment with Seth Rollins. The World Heavyweight Champion asked if Cody wanted to make their match official for WrestleMania but Drew McIntyre interrupted the American Nightmare before he could do so, arguing it should be him that challenges Rollins at WrestleMania. After Rollins laughed at Irn Dru, McIntyre attacked the champion before Cody made the save.
Rhodes then headed to the back without giving an answer. WWE's plans for WrestleMania 40 are likely to be confirmed later this week when the company holds a WrestleMania press conference in Las Vegas on Thursday.
