In his recent interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, CM Punk was asked about his opinion of Tony Khan. Although he repeatedly clarified that he likes Khan on a personal level, Punk was critical of the AEW president and co-owner as a boss, explaining:

"I don't like the drama but the truth is the truth: he is not a boss, he's a nice guy, and I think ultimately that is a detriment to the company, but it's not my company."

Punk also stated his belief that his perception of AEW's aims as a wrestling promotion don't align with his own, and appeared to criticise Khan for refusing to let him leave after the infamous 'Brawl Out' incident. It was instead reported that Punk was given creative powers on the new AEW Collision weekly show, a show many have since speculated was created to keep the warring parties within AEW separated:

"[AEW] isn't a real business, this isn't a business predicated on making money, drawing money, selling tickets, you know? It's not what it was sold to me as, so let me go. 'Oh, I can't let you go, I'm going to do a new show.'"

Punk was fired from AEW following a reported altercation backstage with Jack Perry at the All In pay-per-view at Wembley Stadium in August 2023. He returned to WWE at Survivor Series a few months later, and is now set to be a part of WrestleMania 40 (albeit in a non-wrestling capacity, having sustained an injury during the 2024 men's Royal Rumble match.)
