Andrade el Idolo made his long-awaited return to WWE at the Royal Rumble in January 2024, weeks after his final match in All Elite Wrestling.

The former NXT Champion made his final AEW appearance in a losing effort to Miro at AEW Worlds End on December 30, 2023 before exiting the company at the expiration of his deal. Whilst most assumed Andrade would be back in WWE, a report from Dave Meltzer on X/Twitter indicates that AEW made Andrade ‘a good offer to stay’ which Andrade obviously turned down.

With his wife Charlotte Flair in WWE, as well as former NXT head Triple H now running the promotion, few were surprised by Andrade’s intention to return to the company. Andrade had previously been suspended by AEW for his part in instigating a backstage scrap with Samy Guevara in 2022, with it believed he was angling to be fired to facilitate a WWE return.

Reports surrounding AEW’s allegations against WWE concerning potential contract tampering in 2022 suggested that Andrade was one of the talents targeted, with the Guevara altercation believed to be a reaction to alleged approaches.
