Who could The Top Guys challenge?

Fifteen months after they first reportedly asked for their WWE releases, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder have finally been freed from the promotion. The multi-time Tag Team champions are apparently free to sign anywhere immediately, due to the nature of their releases, and most would figure that a move to All Elite Wrestling is as certain as sunrise.

The tag team specialists have lots of opportunities outside the confines of WWE, be they in AEW or elsewhere. It's possible that they could sign with AEW, and that their contracts could permit them the right to wrestle for other promotions (like how Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley's deals allow for New Japan bookings). But whatever road Dawson and Wilder (or Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler, whatever their new identities end up being) take, hopefully it's to their liking. After all, they've finally gotten the release they've sought for a long time.

Since we here at Cultaholic enjoy a little fantasy booking, let's take a look at some intriguing tag team matches that could be in The Revival's future, both in AEW and out.

Since we here at Cultaholic enjoy a little fantasy booking, let's take a look at some intriguing tag team matches that could be in The Revival's future, both in AEW and out.

5. The Young Bucks

Young bucks

File this one under "duh". The playful sniping between the teams on social media, with "FTR" standing for different phrases (depending on the user), has turned Bucks vs. Revival into a genuine dream match. If The Revival end up in AEW, this match would probably happen sooner rather than later.

It helps that both teams are immensely talented, for different reasons. One can't help but see a little bit of The Rockers vs. Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard from 1989 WWF here, and that's a good thing.

4. Kenny Omega & Adam Page

Omega page

It remains to be seen how much longer Omega and "Hangman" hold onto the belts, and how long until somebody turns on somebody else within The Elite, but since they're still the champs, let's throw them in here. It took four to tango in their all-timer with The Bucks at Revolution, and they'd match up just as well with The Revival, too.

Given the friction between Page and Omega, you could tell one hell of a story with Dawson and Wilder taking advantage of two gifted wrestlers that aren't on the same page, using their like-clockwork gamesmanship.

3. Jurassic Express

Jungle boy luchasaurus

AEW has a wealth of tag teams at their disposal, and quite a few of them would match up very well with The Revival: Best Friends, SCU, Santana and Ortiz, and The Lucha Bros would all make for intriguing opponents. But let's consider Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy here, because the classic tag formula would certainly be done justice.

Jungle Boy is the perfect face-in-peril for two heels to break down and isolate, and as he expertly builds sympathy, Luchasaurus is the ideal hot-tag heater to come in and clean house. This pairing has serious potential.

2. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kota Ibushi

So let's say The Revival members both receive those flexible AEW contracts that allow for the occasional New Japan excursion. While G.O.D., David Finlay and Juice Robinson, and various L.I.J combos would make for fine matchups, why not go with the champions? Especially when the Heavyweight Tag Team belts are held by two true icons in "Golden Ace"?

For some of you, the mere thought of Tanahashi, Ibushi, Dawson, and Wilder all sharing the same ring in Tokyo or Osaka is enough to induce a steady stream of drool. That's why they're on this list.

1. The Rock 'N Roll Express

Somehow, you'd think Dawson and Wilder would light up at this idea, which seems like a bucket list item for both. The NWA resurrection in 2019 brought back some warm feelings for a bygone time, with Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson there to represent the glorious past.

While both are indeed in their sixties and a ways removed from their transcendent primes, the older fan in some of us pines for this clash of eras. If Morton and Gibson have one more magnum opus in their collective, who better to help them coax it out than the modern-day Midnight Express-meets-The Andersons?
